Who Was Saint John Bosco?

St. John Bosco: Priest, Educator and Friend of YouthDon Bosco Photo

Saint John Bosco was a priest and educator, born  in 1815 at Becchi, a hill-side hamlet near Castelnuovo, Italy. He dedicated his life to educating poor and homeless youth. This heroic priest’s undying belief in the youth he sought to educate inspired them to virtue and to fulfill their potential in different vocations and trades. He wrote much about education in over 130 books, pamphlets and articles. One of his sayings was: “Remember that knowledge without morals is the souls ruination.”  St. John Bosco’s “Preventive System” of education is built upon the core ideas of reason, religion and kindness. When asked about the secret of his immense success with the young, St. John Bosco, simply replied: “Love.”

Bosco Dominic He taught, “Without confidence and love, there can be no true education.” Through his work with youth who lived on the streets of Turin during Italy’s industrial revolution, St. John Bosco’s love for God was manifested in his love and concern for each of his students. At St. John Bosco High School, we constantly strive to live up to the sanctity of our patron Saint, including his devotion to Mary, Help of Christians.   Each adult who serves this school strives to be a worthy guide and mentor to students, drawing strength and love from prayer and frequent reception of the Sacraments.

As a school we seek to follow and teach St. John Bosco’s simple guide to holiness:

1.         I will be cheerful.

2.         I will do my duties well.

3.         I will stay close to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

4.         I will honor and love Mary as my Mother and Helper.don bosco old photo

5.         I choose to be kind.

6.         I want to serve rather than be served.

Prayer to Mary, Help of Christians written by St. John Bosco

Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christian,
how sweet it is to come to your feet
imploring your perpetual help. If earthly mothers cease not to remember their children,  how can you, the most loving of all mothers forget me? Grant then to me, I implore you,  your perpetual help in all my necessities,  in every sorrow, and especially in all my temptations. I ask for your unceasing help for all who are now suffering. Help the weak, cure the sick, convert sinners. Grant through your Bosco Help of Christiansintercessions many vocations to the religious life.  Obtain for us, O Mary, Help of Christians, that having invoked you on earth we may love and eternally thank you in heaven.
